Here are three things to know:
1. Dr. Banerjee allegedly committed fraud by billing for urine toxicology testing as well as epidural injections through an ASC and lab he owned for workers compensation cases. He allegedly billed for $180,000 worth of services, although the self-referral is illegal in California.
2. On July 9, Dr. Banerjee appeared in the Riverside County Superior Court and pled not guilty to the charges and signed “under penalty of perjury five doctor’s reports that he had not referred workers compensation patients to companies he owned,” according to the report. He faces two counts of insurance fraud and five of perjury.
3. Dr. Banerjee is currently free on bond with his next court date scheduled for August. The state recommended his license be suspended, but the judge denied the state’s motion, allowing him to continue practicing.
