Battle in Washington: Providers appeal to Congress about insurer mergers — 4 points

Various medical groups will appear before Congress to voice concerns over the recent health insurance mega-mergers. Both the insurers and providers are recruiting lobbyists for the impending debate, according to Forbes.

Here are five points:

1. The American Medical Association and American Hospital Association representatives are expected to appeal to Congress to closely examine the recent health insurance company mergers.

2. The appeals may not carry much weight because Congress rarely agrees on healthcare matters. Congress has not been able to make alterations to the Affordable Care Act even though Congress claimed it would in the 2014 midterm elections.

3. Providers are concerned the health insurer mergers will cost them financially and will leave patients with limited choices.

4. The health insurers are hiring lobbyists as they have billion of dollars at risk. Aetna and Cigna have hired several new firms to add to their team of lobbyists.
