Barack Obama encourages ACA enrollment as numbers sag — 5 insights

After former President Barack Obama took to social media to encourage enrollment, CMS released a status report Dec. 12 showing fewer people signed up for the Affordable Care Act than last year.

Here are five takeaways:

1. In week six of open enrollment for 2019, 934,269 people selected plans using the HealthCare.gov platform.

2. That's down from the numbers in week six of open enrollment for 2018, when 1,073,921 people selected plans.

3. As enrollment weeks are measured Sunday through Saturday, the cumulative totals in the 2019 snapshot reflect one fewer day than the 2018 snapshot.

4. Former President Obama posted a video online Dec. 10, encouraging more people to sign up.

5. The sign-up deadline for most states is Dec. 15.
