Anthem threatens to leave exchanges, implement double-digit premiums if subsidies end

If the Trump administration discontinues cost-sharing subsidies, Anthem CEO Joseph Swedish said the payer would likely leave many ACA exchanges or increase premiums by double-digits, according to the New York Times.

Here are five key points:

1. If officials don't make a decision over subsidies by June, Mr. Swedish said the company may increase its rates by at least 20 percent in 2018.

2. Mr. Swedish said ending subsidies would further increase the payer market's instability.

3. He implored officials to get rid of the tax on health insurance as this move would reduce premiums and create a reinsurance program.

4. Despite concerns over an unstable market, Anthem fared fairly well in fiscal year 2016, with its overall profits totaling $1 billion.

5. On April 26, Anthem shares closed at $179.03, a 3.8 percent jump.
