The study also found that education is further underway but more education is needed. The survey responses showed:
• 72 percent of hospitals have begun ICD-10 education.
• Of the hospitals without steering committees, 50 percent have not started education.
• 30 percent of providers will exclusively use Web-based educational resources.
• 53 percent of respondents want an education firm to provide ICD-10 help.
Researchers also gave action items for providers regarding the code set switch. They recommended planning to hire coders to help with backlogs; fine tuning budgets for coder education and refining industry budget benchmarks; and participating in quarterly auditing of the ICD-10 process later in 2013.
