AHIMA: Do Not Delay ICD-10 Training

Heather Linder -

Kathy DeVault, manager of professional practice resources at AHIMA, encourages practices to begin training coders and billers now on ICD-10 because of the amount of codes to learn, according to EHR Intelligence.

With 21 chapters in the ICD-10 code book, if you start now, you can learn one chapter each month before the implementation deadline, according to Ms. DeVault. Don't delay. Do something every month.

For physicians, learning ICD-10 is less about codes sets and more about the documentation associated with codes. Physicians will need to get more specific with their diagnoses, according to the report. For instance, a finger fracture in ICD-9 may need to be a fractured distal portion of the right index finger in ICD-10.
