Funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program lapsed Sept. 30, putting 9 million children who have coverage at risk, NPR reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Legislators were working to repeal the ACA as the deadline passed. However, CHIP has bipartisan support and a measure should likely pass once introduced.
2. The House Energy and Commerce Committee posted a bill extending funding for five years on Oct. 2. The plan would phase out 23 percentage points of funding provided under the ACA. It mirrors a similar plan in the Senate Finance Committee. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the proposal Oct. 4.
3. States can use unspent federal funding to continue CHIP programs in the interim. It's expected states could run out of money before the end of 2017. Children will retain coverage until funding runs out. No states have announced plans to freeze enrollment or potentially end coverage.
Utah did announce plans to discontinue CHIP by the end of the year, if the state didn't receive more funding.
4. CHIP went several weeks without funding in 2007.
