Aetna to cover sacroiliac joint fusion under new policy

Aetna will cover minimally invasive arthrodesis of the sacroiliac joint under a new policy, which was outlined in a May 29 announcement from medical device company SI-Bone.

Effective May 28, the policy gives Aetna's 22 million medical plan members coverage for SI-Bone's iFuse Implant System when its use is deemed medically necessary.

Aetna's decision was based upon clinical evidence — including five-year results from a prospective study — of the iFuse system's safety and effectiveness, SI-Bone said in a press release.
