The vast majority of U.S. clinicians and office administrators trust artificial intelligence to handle prior authorization, according to a survey conducted by Cohere Health, a healthcare technology company.
Among 200 respondents, 99% of clinicians and 96% of administrators expressed confidence in AI-driven prior authorization decisions. Most also cited significant harms from current processes: 95% of administrators and 92% of clinicians called prior authorization a burden, and 55% had seen patients abandon care due to delays, according to an Oct. 7 news release.
Despite the call for modernization, only 16% of administrators and 24% of clinicians use digital platforms for more than 40% of submissions. Roughly 25% still rely on fax or phone.
New CMS rules taking effect Jan. 1, 2026, will require faster turnaround times, but just 12% of clinicians and 7% of administrators said they receive decisions within those timeframes, according to the release.
