5 things to know about a physician-led health plan partnership

With North Carolina transitioning from a fee-for-service model to Medicaid managed care plans in 2019, a partnership has emerged between MeridianHealth and Community Care Physician Network.

Here are five things to know about the health plan.

1. MeridianHealth, a family-owned group of health plans based in Michigan and Illinois, formed an agreement with the Raleigh, N.C.-based Community Care Physician Network established by Community Care of North Carolina, also based in Raleigh.

2. Meridian intends to utilize CCPN's integrated primary care network and CCNC's community-based care management to provide access to high-quality care for Medicaid enrollees.

3. To gain part of the state's Medicaid managed care work, Meridian plans on responding to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' request for proposal expected to go out later this year.

4. "Our model is to try to contract with multiple plans and be that single source of care management that really helps improve the care outcome [for] the Medicaid population," said Stan Taylor, CCNC's senior vice president of business development.

5. Additional payer partnerships will arise before and after selections by NCDHHS, Mr. Taylor said. Earlier this year, CCNC formed a partnership to overhaul its clinical systems with the population health and care management platform provider VirtualHealth.

CCNC also partnered with WellCare Health Plans and Aetna, who are looking to become involved in NCDHHS's RFP process.
