5 statistics on physician participation in Medicaid, Medicare

Policy makers are striving to devise a viable healthcare plan, with party members from both ends of the spectrum weighing in on Medicaid expansion's future.

FactCheck.org details key statistics on current physician participation in Medicaid and Medicare based on a series of studies and surveys.

Here are five things to know:

1. CDC 2013 estimates found 68.9 percent of office-based physicians accepted new Medicaid patients.

2. Data shows 84.7 percent accepted new privately insured patients and 3.7 percent accepted new Medicare patients.

3. A Merritt Hawkins and Physicians Foundation survey of 17,326 physicians found 63.7 percent accepted all Medicaid patients in 2016.

4. The survey also found 20.3 percent accepted limited numbers of Medicaid patients in 2016.

5. Medicare acceptance varies by state with National Center for Health Statistics data finding 38.7 percent of New Jersey physicians accept Medicare patients, compared to 96.5 percent of Nebraskan physicians.
