3 things ASCs should know about high-deductible health plans

To adapt to the current payer landscape, ASCs should understand how to manage patients who have high-deductible health plans, according to ASC management software company Simplify ASC.

Three things to know about high-deductible health plans:

1. High-deductible health plans, which shift most of the cost burden to the patient, make up 26 percent of an average ASC's commercial payer mix. Over 40 percent of patients are enrolled in high-deductible health plans, with the average deductible of those plans being $1,350.

2. Because many patients try to schedule surgeries early in the year to meet their deductible, ASCs should expect a higher volume of surgeries at that time.

3. Flexibility is key when working with patients with high-deductible health plans. Some patients may need to enroll in a payment plan to pay their copay.
