The Joint Commission publishes ambulatory care, office-based surgery chapters

Laura Dyrda -

The Joint Commission published the "Comprehensive Accreditation for Manual Ambulatory Care" and "Standards for Office-Based Surgery Practices" chapters on Jan. 1.

The chapters describes how ambulatory care organizations and office-based surgery practices apply Joint Commission requirements to "support an integrated patient safety system as specified in Leadership (LD) Standard LD.04.04.05," according to The Joint Commission. The chapter promotes staff working together to encourage mindfulness, avoid complacency and treat each other respectfully. It also addresses learning from patient safety events.

The chapter also examines risk reduction for providers to identify and correct problems before they reach the patient. Leaders in the ambulatory care patient safety system should:

• Promote learning
• Behave professionally
• Motivate a safety culture among staff
• Encourage transparency for reporting patient harms and quality measures
• Eliminate intimidation
