The Joint Commission introduces new requirement for ambulatory sleep centers — 3 key notes

The Joint Commission approved a new element of performance to assess high-quality care in ambulatory sleep centers.

Here's what you should know.

1. All ambulatory facilities specializing in sleep care must "grant initial, renewed or revised clinical privileges to individuals who are permitted by law and the organization to practice independently," according to The Joint Commission press release.

2. The organization must verify its providers are either certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association; or the organization must verify the provider created a fellowship in an accredited sleep medicine program.

3. The new element is effective Jan. 1, 2018.
