The Joint Commission: How healthcare organizations can advance antimicrobial stewardship

Formal leadership and multidisciplinary programs can help fight infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics, according to an article published in the July 2019 edition of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

Three ways to advance antimicrobial stewardship:

1. Appoint strong leadership and secure financial support to comply with antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.

2. Engage clinicians who work with patients on guidelines and antimicrobial stewardship interventions.

3. Create standards for evaluating infections during care transitions to help advance stewardship initiatives.
