For their study, researchers observed hand hygiene occurring at an urban, academic emergency department from Jan. 2009-April 2010. The ED has 146 alcohol-based handrub dispensers and 45 sinks.

Results of their standardized observation protocol showed hand hygiene compliance was 89.7 percent. Researchers concluded several predictors that affected hand hygiene compliance, including observation unit location, glove use and worker type. Hallway location, which was pre-specified as high visibility, was the strongest predictor of hand hygiene compliance.
