Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio, will not be penalized by CMS for performing wrong-site surgery on a woman earlier this year, according to a Chillicothe Gazette report.
Arthroscopic surgery was performed on both of a woman’s knees when only one was supposed to be operated on. CMS substantiated the complaint filed but found the hospital to be in compliance with established rules since it took corrective actions on its own accord to ensure wrong-site procedures do not happen again.
The hospital has implemented new policies, such as wrapping limbs not to be operated on in brightly colored materials to prevent incisions.
For wrong-site procedures, CMS can either place the hospital at risk to lose Medicare and Medicaid payments or take no action. Even when hospitals are at risk of losing reimbursement, CMS officials say the goal is to bring them back into compliance.
