The “Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare” program currently runs at six New Jersey hospitals. The program is designed to help healthcare professionals better understand empathy, learn new cultures and enhance communication and relationships with other staff members through writing seminars, book clubs and other measures, according to the news report.

In one example, Nancy Gross, the moderator of the program at Overlook Hospital, led a book discussion on “Death in Venice” to help healthcare providers better understand patients during the last moments before death and how to deal with patients during such sensitive times.
