The Leapfrog Group has submitted comments to CMS on the proposed 2027 Inpatient Prospective Payment System rule, urging the agency to significantly expand quality and safety measures for ambulatory surgery centers, according to an Aug. 21 news release.
The patient safety organization said the payment rule is without adequate accountability as more complex procedures migrate to outpatient settings.
Leapfrog’s most pressing concern is that the proposed rule includes no expansion of ASC quality measures, despite a continued shift of surgical volume, and patient risk, according to the news release, into the ASC setting.
The group also urged CMS to pair hospital price transparency data with quality information, arguing that cost data alone cannot drive affordability or better care without corresponding safety metrics for patients and purchasers to evaluate.
