A subcommittee of the Iowa Senate State Affairs committee held a hearing last week on Senate Study Bill 3012, which would require licensing for all ASCs in the state, according to an ASCA report.
Currently, surgery centers must obtain a certificate of need prior to opening a surgery center, but the state enforces no other licensing requirements. To receive a license, an ASC would have to submit an application with a $500 license fee, follow rules from the Department of Inspections and Appeals and meet federal requirements for conditions of participation in Medicare.
ASCs currently in operation would be given approximately one year to comply with the new requirements. The legislation is supported by the Iowa Hospital Association.
