Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed legislation that would give the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts more power in disciplining physicians, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.

Under the new law, the healing arts board would be able to more quickly discipline physicians by conducting immediate hearings and competency tests. Previously, physicians suspected of incompetence, substance abuse or mental illness had to come before the state administrative hearing commission, which could take several years, according to the report.
