CMS unveils surveyor training website with ASC courses — 4 quick insights

The CMS survey and certification group launched a training website to help surveyors and facilities prepare for upcoming surveys.

Here are four quick insights about the Integrated Surveyor Training Website.

1. The online course catalog can be filtered by instructional format or content.

2. Instructional formats include video, document, web-based and webinar.

3. Several ASC-specific courses are available:

  • Ambulatory surgical center basic training: a 52-hour web-based course on the ASC survey process and the Conditions for Coverage found in the electronic Code of Federal Regulations and the State Operations Manual.
  • Safe reprocessing of flexible endoscopes: an archived webinar presented by the CMS Survey and Certification Group to aid surveyors’ ability to observe endoscope reprocessing.
  • Emergency preparedness basic surveyor training course: a 16-hour online course for helping surveyors and reviewers survey providers and suppliers for compliance with their individual emergency preparedness requirements.
  • Introduction to surveying for non-long term care: an online course on surveying non-long term care facilities and defending survey findings in a hearing.
  • Principles of documentation for non-long term care: an online course intended to prepare State Survey Agency and CMS Regional Office non-long term care surveyors and reviewers to properly document a healthcare facility survey.
  • Ambulatory surgical centers refresher training: a web-based course for experienced ASC surveyors to review and refresh their knowledge of the survey process and Conditions for Coverage.
  • Basic writing skills for survey staff: a two-hour online course on correct language and techniques for writing potentially legal defensible documentation.

4. Other course topics include surveyor decision-making, investigative techniques and infection prevention and control.
