ASC Durango in Colorado Targets Areas for Improvement Following AAAHC Survey

ASC Durango (Colo.) recently underwent its first AAAHC survey and achieved accreditation. Cheryl Desko, RN, clinical director for the ASC, discusses a few areas the ASC targeted for improvement following the survey.

Cheryl Desko: It was brought to my attention that the post-op instructions given to the patient were lacking in areas, especially in medication review. The surveyor didn’t feel that the patients were educated as to when they should take their medications once they got home. We changed the medication reconciliation form to indicate the times that the patient received any medications and the nurse giving the instructions is now asking for a return in instructions.

We have also instituted a post-operative peripheral nerve block instruction sheet to allow patients that have received a PNB the knowledge of what to expect once they get home.

We are also reviewing our operating agreement and medical staff by-laws to ensure that our facility is being governed as the documents state they are to be.
