P. Jeffrey Brady, MD, was named co-chair of The National Steering Committee for Patient Safety, a group created to advance efforts to eliminate patient harm.
Here are five quick notes.
1. Dr. Brady is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety director.
He will work alongside co-chair Tejal Gandhi, MD, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's chief clinical and safety officer.
2. The National Steering Committee for Patient Safety will develop a National Action Plan for the Prevention of Health Care Harm, a national blueprint for protecting patients from death and injury.
3. The committee met for the first time May 22 in Boston, comprised of nearly two dozen experts from healthcare, policy, regulatory and advocacy communities.
4. Inaugural members include the AHRQ, American College of Surgeons and The Joint Commission.
5. The committee emerged after a 2017 Call to Action issued by the National Patient Safety Foundation, which merged with IHI.
"Even today, too many patients are harmed when seeking care. But we believe strongly that a new era of patient safety is within reach and that we can accomplish much more working together to solve this problem than working alone. Coordination in pursuit of this shared commitment will help us make better use of the knowledge we have and learn more about how to keep patients safe," Dr. Brady said.
