Simulations and emergency drills are essential for ASCs to be prepared in case of an emergency, according to the AAAHC.

The AAAHC updated its emergency drills patient safety toolkit, and is hosting a webinar Sep. 18 on six important steps ASCs can take to be prepared for emergencies.

The steps include:

1. Evaluating the internal disaster preparedness plan

2. Preparing for an emergency drill

3. Letting patients know about emergency drills

4. Treating drills like real emergencies

5. Performing an evaluation of team members after the drills

6. Correcting emergency plan shortfalls and implementing improved plans
