St. Lucie Surgery Center in Port St. Lucie, Fla., won the 2014 surgical/procedural care award.

In 2012, the surgery center observed a number of its patients were being admitted to hospital emergency departments for postoperative urinary retention. In response, the center acquired a bladder scanner and established protocols to screen all patients at high-risk for POUR. Since the implementation of the program in April 2012, only two of the surgery center’s patients have been admitted to an ED for POUR.

The 2014 primary care award winner was the North Carolina State Study Health Services in Raleigh.

Courtyard Surgery Pavilion in Visalia, Calif., and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma received honorable mentions.
