7 top HAI prevention standard challenges from The Joint Commission

The Joint Commission released its 2017 Top Non-compliant Ambulatory Care Standards for Health Centers report, outlining the most difficult standards for healthcare providers.

Here are the most challenging standards for healthcare-associated infection prevention and control:

1. Identifying infection risks based on an organization's geographic location, community and population served.

2. Identifying infection risks based on the care, treatment or services the organization provides.

3. Prioritizing the identified risks for acquiring and transmitting infections, and documenting those prioritized risks.

4. Using standard precautions, including personal protective equipment, to reduce infection risk.

5. Implementing infection prevention and control activities when cleaning and performing low-level disinfection of medical equipment, devices and supplies.

6. Implementing infection prevention and control activities when performing intermediate and high-level disinfection and sterilization of medical equipment, devices and supplies.

7. Implementing infection prevention and control activities when storing medical equipment, devices and supplies.
