5 Top Accreditation Mistakes from AAAHC

Ellie Rizzo -

At the 12th Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference + Future of Spine on June 12, 2014 in Chicago, Ray Grundman, senior director of external relations for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, shared some of the most common accreditation mistakes for orthopedic, spine and pain-Driven ASCs.

The top five mistakes the AAAHC encounters across all ASCs during accreditation include:

1. Using an incorrect version of accreditation handbook. "If the survey is scheduled before June 30, you'll be using previous year's handbook," said Mr. Grundman.

2. Untimely or late submission of the application. The AAAHC sends reminder letters nine, six and three months before reaccreditation. "At the six-month mark, open the accreditation application and start putting documents in it. Then don’t forget to hit send," said Mr. Grundman.

3. Changing survey date after survey is scheduled. "If you need to change the schedule, we'll work with you, but it may mean additional expenditures," he said.

4. Lack of adequate preparation. This can include not reading the handbook, deciding which chapters apply, not using the handbook as a worksheet, not conducting a mock survey and not working as a team.

5. Lack of appropriate orientation for survey team. Mr. Grundman recommends a Powerpoint presentation to acclimate the surveyors as to the environment in which the center exists and the expertise of the center in question.
