1. The Joint Commission’s standing committees and advisory groups, accreditation organizations, professional organizations and consuming groups examine emerging quality and safety issues and can suggest modifications to standards based on scientific literature or discussions.
2. The Joint Commission prepares standards based on input from the technical advisory panel, focus groups, experts as well as other shareholders and then field-specific professional and technical advisory committees review the standards.
3. The Joint Commission distributes the standard draft for review nationally and accept comments before a final review and then the SSP Committee approves the final standards.
4. There is continued feedback for improvement once the standards go into effect.
5. The new standards are added only if they improve patient safety or quality of care and outcomes.
