3 Quick Tips from Sheldon Sones

Here are three quick safety and medication tips from Sheldon S. Sones, RPh, FASCP, a Newington, Conn.-based consultant, pharmacist and safe medication officer serving more than 100 ASCs in the Northeast.

1. Put some water into a medication cup, freeze it, place a penny on top and place the cup at the front of your freezer. If the penny is ever at the bottom of the cup, you know the freezer has died.

2. As your drugs near their expiration date, put a colored sticker on the drug (or use another eye-catching mechanism) to encourage staff to pay particularly close attention to the date before using the drugs.

3. Looking to quickly convert pounds to kilograms? Take the weight in pounds, cut the figure in half and subtract 10 percent.

For example, to convert 200 pounds to kilograms, reduce the number by half (200/2 = 100) and then subtract 10 percent (100 x 10% = 10; 100 – 10) and you get the converted weight of 90 kilograms.
