Former Wisconsin anesthesiologist John Kidd, MD, surrendered his state license in 2012 amid several allegations against him, then moved to New York, where he practices with a clean record, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Here's what happened:
1. Dr. Kidd was an anesthesiologist with Appleton, Wis.-based Association of Hospital Anesthesiologists. He was fired in 2010, after a series of allegations were brought against him.
2. Dr. Kidd allegedly did not help a physician and nurse who rushed to the aid of a pediatric patient having trouble breathing; did not respond to a patient who complained of pain after having a limb amputated; and came to work impaired and smelling of alcohol. He also faces several other allegations.
3. The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services investigated the allegations for 18 months but found no reason to reprimand Dr. Kidd.
4. Despite that, Dr. Kidd surrendered his license and agreed to not reapply for it. The Journal Sentinel called the measure "a step some doctors take to avoid a blemish on their public record."
5. Dr. Kidd was granted a New York state license in September 2011. The Wisconsin allegations are not present anywhere in his record. He is one of about 250 physicians in the country who surrendered a license in one state since 2012 but continue to practice in another state.
