Why Anesthesiologists in Bundled Payment Programs Should Look to Increasing Implant Price Transparency

Studies have shown that the cost of the implant accounts for a large portion of the total cost of knee or hip replacement surgery and anesthesiologists who are participating in joint replacement bundled payment programs or gainsharing programs have a clear interest in containing spending on procedures, according to an Anesthesia Business Consultants blog post.

In the blog post, Tony Mira, president and CEO of Anesthesia Business Consultants, notes that a Health Affairs study stated that previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of initiatives to educate physicians on the costs of the items they order.
Seeing as the objective of bundled payment and gainsharing programs is to reward efficient services and to shift the risk of excessive costs to the participating providers, it would be advantageous for participating surgeons to opt for lower cost devices provided that quality is not impaired.

Anesthesiologists have a potential role in finding and making available the information on device prices. Anesthesiologists should try and look for opportunities to encourage cost sensitivity at their organizations without breaking confidentiality clauses device purchasing agreements, according to the blog post.
