The center was established to bring together scientists and physicians to conduct research on the mechanisms that cause itch. The findings are eventually expected to help find better treatments for chronic itch sufferers. Sufferers include those with certain types of cancer, patients with liver and kidney disease and patients with skin diseases.
Dr. Chen became interested in itch while researching genes in the spinal cord’s pain pathway. He discovered a potential pain-sensing gene called gastrin-releasing peptide receptor, which turned out to be the first itch-specific receptor to be identified.
The center will be divided into two main sections: the basic research and behavioral core based in the Department of Anesthesiology and the section on clinical research, trials and patient care. Dr. Chen will direct the basic research section.
