Dr. Matthews’ license was indefinitely suspended in June 2009, when she was employed by Winchester Anesthesiologists. A consent order from June 2009 shows that Dr. Matthews admitted to diverting morphine for her own use several times between Oct. 2007 and Oct. 2008. According to the report, she was providing anesthesia for a carotid endartectomy on Oct. 3, 2008, when she diverted the morphine and took it herself.
The 2009 order shows Dr. Matthews entered the Virginia Health Practitioners’ Intervention Program after she admitted to diverting the morphine. The order said she could not apply for reinstatement for two years. She appeared before a Virginia Board of Medicine special conference committee on Aug. 25. The committee reinstated her license.
