Vanderbilt taps director of new nurse anesthesia program

Brent Dunworth, DNP, CRNA, has been named the director of the new nurse anesthesia program at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.

The program is slated to launch in 2026, according to a Nov. 8 news release from the university. Dr. Dunworth has a joint appointment as a VUSN associate professor of nursing and with the school of medicine as an associate professor of clinical anesthesiology.

He most recently served as associate nurse executive of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Office of Advanced Practice, leading more than 1,600 certified registered nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists and physician assistants.

He has 25 years of experience as a CRNA and more than 20 years of experience as an educator. 

Dr. Dunworth joined VUMC in 2015. Previously, he was the senior director for nurse anesthesia at Pittsburgh-based UPMC. 

Vanderbilt School of Nursing announced plans to launch a three-year nurse anesthesia program in 2023. The program is pending review for initial accreditation by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
