Burlington, Vt.-based University of Vermont Medical Center has adopted a new approach to delivering anesthesia expected to reduce nitrous oxide purchases by 88% and save more than $10,000 each year, according to a Sept. 3 WCAX report.
The update will also cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 483 metric tons annually, equivalent to the yearly output of 65 homes, hospital officials said. Leaders framed the change as part of broader efforts to lessen the environmental impact of healthcare operations, according to the report.
The medical center said that the shift will not affect patient care or outcomes.
