The settlements were approved by the state appeals board earlier this month. Patient Melinda Schultz will receive $300,000 — $225,000 from the state and $75,000 from University of Iowa Physicians — for what she alleged was negligence on the part of UIHC anesthesiologists when they administered anesthesia during her 2004 surgery.
According to documents filed in Johnson County Court, a UIHC anesthesiologist was negligent in the administration of an anesthesia block before Ms. Schultz’s knee surgery in 2004. Ms. Schultz argued the negligence left her disabled and resulted in lost wages.
