UniPerc Tracheostomy Kit for Larger Necks Receives Design Award

The Portex UniPerc Percutaneous Tracheostomy Kit, the first dedicated percutaneous tracheostomy option with tubes designed specifically for patients with larger necks, has received a 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award from Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine, according to a news release from Smiths Medical, which manufactures the kit.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. An impartial multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine and diagnostics reviewed the entries, according to the release.

All Portex UniPerc products and their components are designed to make percutaneous insertions into large necks quick, safe and effective, according to the release. The UniPerc range is particularly suitable for patients who have large, muscular, bull or obese necks that pose unique challenges for healthcare providers. Proprietary features of the UniPerc range allows the tracheostomy tube to be used where standard tubes are inappropriate.
