Ultrasound-Guided Paravertebral Blocks May Improve Quality of Recovery After Breast Surgery, Study Finds

The use of ultrasound-guided paravertebral blocks during breast cancer surgery can improve the quality of recovery and decrease recovery time, according to a study published in the March edition of Anesthesiology.

Researchers compared the use of ultrasound-guided paravertebral blocks to the use of general anesthetic in a randomized controlled trial of 64 women undergoing breast surgery. The ultrasound-guided paravertebral block technique is a technique by which a local anesthetic is delivered to freeze breast nerves.

The study found that the paravertebral block patients had superior pain relief, spent less time in recovery rooms after surgery and were discharged an hour earlier than patients who were put under general anesthesia.
