U of Wisconsin severely lacks female anesthesiologists — 6 insights

A Madison-based University of Wisconsin report criticized the university's anesthesia department because of its lack of female presence, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The university conducted a climate review from February 2017 to August 2017. Department Chairman Robert Pearce, MD, resigned in July. The report describes the department as a "good-old boys network."

2. The department has twice as many men as women on staff, and a majority of women served as part-time faculty.

3. The report found issues like:

  • Female residents are told "don't rock the boat"
  • Pregnant women are humiliated
  • Male physicians refer to Madison-based American Family Children's Hospital — with a mostly female presence — as "the crying hospital" or "candyland."

4. Several women told surveyors that men criticize female's commitment to medicine "because of family priorities."

5. The chief of staff for the university's provost, Eden Inoway-Ronnie, said to the paper the department is "engaged in strategic planning … which is expected to result in changes that will address a number of recommendations."

6. Aimee Baker, MD, was named the department's interim chair. Dr. Pearce remains on faculty working as a researcher and anesthesiologist.
