University of Chicago Medicine tapped Peter Nagele, MD, to lead its anesthesia and critical care department, effective March 1.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dr. Nagele was most recently with Washington University in St. Louis, where he was chief of trauma anesthesiology and an associate professor of anesthesiology and genetics.
2. Throughout his career, he developed a reputation as "an authority on perioperative pharmacogenomics." He has discovered novel heart biomarkers that may predict heart attacks and has conducted work suggesting that briefly inhaling a mild anesthetic nitrous oxide can improve severe depression.
3. After earning his medical degree from Innsbruck, Austria-based Leopold-Franzens University, he completed a residency at Vienna, Austria-based University of Vienna and postdoctoral training at Washington University.
