As anesthesiology braces for a looming workforce shortage, employers are competing for talent in increasingly creative ways, from seven-figure compensation packages to no-call, no-weekend practice models, according to a new analysis from Marit Health.
Marit analyzed more than 4,000 active anesthesiology job listings to rank the top opportunities across three employer types: academic institutions, health systems and medical groups. The median total compensation for anesthesiologists is $556,000, though the range varies widely by subspecialty and employer type. Cardiac anesthesiologists post the highest average compensation at $605,000, while OB anesthesiologists average $451,000.
Among academic listings, Valley Children’s Healthcare topped the rankings with a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist role in Madera, Calif., that can exceed $1.1 million annually with productivity pay. Northern Light Health in Bangor, Maine, ranked second, offering a $620,000 base with uncapped student loan reimbursement and visa sponsorship.
On the health system side, Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health led with a role paying $400,000 to $600,000 plus $200,000 in sign-on and retention incentives. Notably, several health system listings have moved away from traditional on-call demands entirely — Centracare in Willmar, Minn., explicitly markets a no-call, no-nights, no-weekends model.
Among medical groups, Nashville, Tenn.-based Envision Healthcare topped the list with a fixed three-shift week, no weekends and no overnight call alongside a $415,000 base and $120,000 bonus package. TeamHealth’s traveling anesthesiologist role ranked third, offering $650,000 to $750,000 with 12 weeks of PTO.
