Advertised anesthesiologist salaries in the Midwest have quietly climbed to rival, and in some cases surpass, traditionally high-paying coastal and Sun Belt markets, according to Q1 2026 data from BagMask.com.
Here are four things to know:
1. North Dakota now posts the second-highest average advertised anesthesiologist salary in the country at $633,333, trailing only Alaska, which had just one data point. Its pay floor of $500,000 is among the highest in the nation, signaling that even baseline positions in the state command a significant premium.
2. Louisiana leads the South but Illinois leads the Midwest in total volume of high-paying postings. Illinois averaged $571,036 in Q1 2026, with a ceiling of $975,000, one of the highest advertised maximums in the country outside of Arizona and Indiana.
3. Iowa’s pay floor jumped $150,000 in a single quarter, from $300,000 in Q4 2025 to $450,000 in Q1 2026, the largest floor increase of any state. That shift suggests facilities in the state are now competing aggressively for out-of-state talent rather than relying on local pipelines.
4. The Midwest’s rise reflects a broader pattern the report identifies: extreme employment demand is forcing facilities in the region to push advertised W2 base rates to their limit, with the gap between minimum and average salaries narrowing — a sign that even entry-level offers are being pulled upward.
