The U.S. Surgeon General and board-certified anesthesiologist Jerome Adams, MD, assisted in a medical emergency on a Delta flight from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Atlanta May 16, The Washington Post reports.
Here are five things to know.
1. Dr. Adams tweeted that the crew of Delta flight 1827 asked if there was a physician on board to assist with a medical emergency. Dr. Adams and two nurses responded to the medical emergency while the plane was on the tarmac at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
2. The passenger-turned-patient lost consciousness and Dr. Adams determined it was necessary to return to the gate and have the patient evaluated in a hospital setting. According to Dr. Adams, the patient is doing well.
3. Dr. Adams previously served as the health commissioner of Indiana. President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Adams as surgeon general in June 2017, and he assumed the position in August 2017.
4. As U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Adams oversees the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, more than 6,600 uniformed public healthcare personnel who work in the federal government.
5. Dr. Adams received his medical degree from the Indianapolis-based Indiana University School of Medicine and earned a master of public health degree from UC Berkeley.
