Currently, ineffective methods of removing waste gases are often used in the PACU, making it difficult to control clinician exposure, according to the report. Anesthetic waste gas leaks from a patient’s breathing circuit have potential side effects of nausea, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, birth defects, cancer and kidney disease.
Teleflex, which is a corporate sponsor for the American Society of Anesthesiologists, has developed a mask to protect clinicians and is awaiting FDA 510(k) approval.
