Surgical volumes still halved for nearly 1 in 4 anesthesia clients

Most of Anesthesia Business Consultants' clients are seeing volumes pick up after elective procedure restrictions, but as of late June, they haven't yet reached pre-COVID-19 levels, said Tony Mira, the company's president and CEO.

Mr. Mira shared four insights from the company's recent client analysis:

1. Ten weeks into the public health emergency, Anesthesia Business Consultants' average client had only resumed 64 percent of typical weekly surgical volumes.

2. Just 13 percent of clients were back to 90 percent of baseline surgical volumes the week of May 18-24. Other clients were experiencing above-average volumes as they worked through COVID-19-related backlogs.

3. Twenty-two percent of practices recovered 75 percent to 90 percent of pre-COVID-19 case volumes by week 10, but another 23 percent were still reporting 50 percent of baseline volumes or less.

4. Most anesthesia practices reported steep surgical volume drops in March and April. The financial fallout from these losses will be most significant in June and July.
