Study: CRNA as Sole Anesthesia Provider is Most Cost-Effective Model

A new study claims a certified registered nurse anesthetist working as the sole anesthesia provider is the most cost-effective model of anesthesia delivery and doesn't impact care quality, according to an American Association of Nurse Anesthetists news release.

The study, published in the Journal of Nursing Economics and conducted by The Lewin Group, concluded the CRNA-only model costs 25 percent less than the next least expensive model.

The authors also concluded that there is no different in care quality when comparing the CRNA-only model with other anesthesia delivery models.

The results of the study, titled "Cost Effectiveness Analysis of Anesthesia Providers," showed the least cost effective anesthesia delivery model to be an anesthesiologist supervising a CRNA.
