Screening pediatric patients before administering anesthesia reduces risk of respiratory adverse events: 5 insights

Use of a screening questionnaire helps anesthesia professionals identify children with symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing before they undergo treatment with a general anesthetic, according to an article in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists’ journal.

1. The questionnaire provides five questions that help to identify sleep-disordered breathing prior to surgery.

2. The questionnaire can be included in the pre-anesthesia interview.

3. Identifying the risk of identify sleep-disordered breathing is very important.  

4. The likelihood of developing a perioperative respiratory adverse event increases three-fold in the presence of any three sleep-disordered breathing symptoms.

5. The likelihood increases by 10-fold when all five symptoms are present.
