Room flipping, surgery cancellations & more — 3 takeaways from recent anesthesia research

Institutions around the country offered anesthesia-related insights at the American Society of Anesthesiologists' Practice Management 2019, Jan. 18-20 in Las Vegas, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Three takeaways from presenters:

1. Room flipping, or the practice of simultaneously scheduling two cases, can cause staffing costs to spike if the strategy is poorly executed, according to a study conducted by UPMC researchers.

2. Preoperative care clinics can help reduce same-day surgery cancellations, according to UC San Diego researchers. The presence of an attending is associated with higher preoperative evaluation quality and patient optimization improvements.

3. Atlanta-based Emory University researchers found providers should focus on appropriately using prophylaxis and standardizing preoperative assessments of venous thromboembolism event risk.
