Reintroducing elective cases: Key considerations for anesthesiologists

Prioritization, coordination and leadership are three key factors for successfully reintroducing elective cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, said American Society of Anesthesiologists President Mary Dale Peterson, MD, during a May 7 webinar.

During the webinar, which was jointly hosted by the ASA and the American College of Healthcare Executives, Dr. Peterson and four other panelists discussed case prioritization, supply preservation, workforce resiliency and testing, among other relevant topics.

The other speakers were:

  • Harry Sax, MD, professor and executive vice chair in the department of surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles
  • Robyn Begley, DNP, RN, CEO of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and senior vice president and chief nursing officer for the American Hospital Association
  • Alan Kaplan, MD, CEO of UW Health in Madison, Wis.
  • Joseph Szokol, MD, ASA's chief health policy officer
